Many business owners, especially solopreneurs and small business owners, may not understand the importance of hiring a professional copywriter. They may think it’s a waste of money, especially when they’re trying to keep costs down.
But the fact is that hiring a professional copywriter isn’t a waste of money, but an investment in your business. Your return on investment will far exceed any costs you pay for copywriting services.
How can a professional copywriter help your bottom line? Below I discuss five different reasons why you should hire a professional copywriter.
1. Writes Persuasive Content That Gets Results
Professional copywriters have been trained in writing persuasively. You want content that persuades the reader to take some kind of action, like signing up for your newsletter, downloading a free report, or purchasing a product or service. This gets you more leads, more customers, and more sales.
But not all writers know how to write persuasively. For example, website developers can write the content for your website, but they may not have been trained in persuasive writing. A novelist can write a spellbinding story, buy may not know how to write persuasive content to market a business.
Persuasive writing is an art. Trained copywriters use proven methods that persuade people to take an action. We’re not talking about twisting people’s arms or putting a gun to their head. Neither are we talking about lying or deceiving people.
We are talking about helping people solve their problems. You have developed products and services to solve certain problems people have. People are looking for solutions to these problems.
So you need well-written, persuasive content to show people that you have the solutions they’re looking for. By buying your products and services, their life will be easier, more fun, more exciting, more rewarding, less stressful, and so on.
For example, say you’re a busy person who likes a clean house, but just don’t have the time to keep it as clean as you would like. You come across two websites asking you to sign up for their newsletter. Which one of the following would you choose?
Website ABC says, “Sign up for our monthly newsletter which has articles showing you how to keep your house clean.”
Website XYZ says, “Sign up for our monthly newsletter. Our newsletter is full of fun advice, easy tips, and time-saving product suggestions that will help you keep your house clean and organized with less work and effort.”
Most people would sign up for Website XYZ’s newsletter. Why?
Look at the words, “fun, easy, time-saving, less work and effort.” These words are hitting your pain point. They are speaking to you as a busy person who doesn’t have time to clean. They are screaming, “This is your solution to having a clean house with less work!”
This is the difference a trained copywriter can help you with.
2. Plans Your Content Marketing Strategy
Today you can market your business in dozens of ways: websites, social media, emails, blogs, newsletters, videos, pay per click (PPC) ads, direct marketing sales letters, radio and TV advertisements, catalogues, brochures, and many more.
Only the biggest companies have the resources to market through all these channels. As a business owner, you need to decide how best to use your marketing budget to market your business.
Your marketing shouldn’t be all over the place, a little here, a little there. It’s important to have a plan or a strategy on how best to market your products and services to your audience.
A copywriter can help you write up a plan within your budget, and then write the content and materials needed. He or she will also make sure that your message and brand are consistent across all marketing channels.
Having a strategy for your content marketing will keep you focused on the best ways to market your business, saving you money, and increasing your return on investment.
3. Simplifies and Clarifies Your Message
A trained copywriter should be able to explain complex ideas in a simple and clear manner that is easy for the average reader to understand.
Have you ever watched a movie where some technical expert was trying to explain something? He was talking in technical terms and complex language.
Everyone in the scene, including you the viewer, was going, “Huh?” Then one of the characters on the show says, “Can you explain that in plain English, please?”
Some writers like to show how “smart” they are by using technical terms, a college vocabulary, and complex sentences. But if the reader is going, “huh?” after reading your content, they’re moving on. Many people are not going to sit, reread, and try to figure out what you’re trying to say. You have one chance to talk to them in an easy-to-understand way.
But I have seen many websites with content that is hard to understand, for example,
“Our proprietary battery-operated high-pressured water power system delivers a highly-focused, variable, pulsating stream of water to eliminate undesirable blemishes, graffiti, paint, and other markings from most concrete, masonry, and metallic surfaces with imperceptible alterations to said surface.”
I didn’t find this on the internet anywhere (I don’t want to call anyone out, I just made it up), but it would be much simpler to say:
“We have created our own high-pressure water system that will remove stains and marks from most hard surfaces with very little damage.”
The old K.I.S.S. formula applies here, Keep It Simple, Smartie. (When I was working as a substitute teacher, I was told we weren’t supposed to say the “S” word!)
4. Helps You Connect with Your Target Audience
A professionally trained copywriter will help you connect with your audience.
Marketing to liberal 20-year-olds living in downtown is going to be different than marketing to conservative 70-year-olds living in a suburban retirement community.
Content needs to be written in a way that speaks the language of the audience you are targeting, so they feel you understand where they’re coming from and that you understand their problems and issues.
When your content and marketing materials speak the language of your target audience, that builds trust. They will be more likely to do business with you.
5. Increases Sales
A professionally trained copywriter will increase your sales. This is really the bottom line. That is why it’s so important to view hiring a professionally trained copywriter as an investment and not an expense.
You may be able to do okay as a business writing all your marketing content yourself, or having an employee do it. But unless you or your employee has been trained in copywriting, your business won’t be achieving its full potential. You won’t be getting all of the customers, clients, or sales that you could be getting.
By hiring a professional copywriter, your business will grow faster, attracting more customers and clients, and increasing sales.
